Meet the Makers: Inside the Artisans of Florence Workshop
Every machine displayed inside the Leonardo da Vinci Museum is handcrafted by the Artisans of Florence. This internationally recognized workshop specializes in historical reconstructions and supplies museums around the world. Their craftsmanship is central to bringing our mission to life.
The process begins with Leonardo’s original sketches. The artisans study proportions, mechanical notes, and conceptual details to understand both the structure and the intended movement of each device. From there, engineers translate the drawings into precise building plans and select materials that reflect those used during the Renaissance.
Inside the workshop, components are cut, shaped, and assembled by hand. No two machines are identical because each reflects the touch and technical decisions of its maker. Wooden gears are fitted carefully, joints are shaped and sanded to ensure smooth movement, and mechanisms are tested repeatedly until they function with the clarity Leonardo intended.
Their work allows visitors to experience Leonardo’s ideas in a tangible, dynamic way. In the months ahead, we will continue sharing more glimpses into this extraordinary partnership and the remarkable craftsmanship behind each machine.
