Machine of the Month: Leonardo’s Armored Vehicle
One of Leonardo da Vinci’s most intriguing mechanical concepts is his armored vehicle. The circular, domed design features multiple cannons and a system intended to be powered by human movement. Although it never moved beyond the sketchbook stage, the idea showcases Leonardo’s ability to combine engineering insight with bold creativity.
The machine includes angled outer plating that redirects incoming projectiles. This design choice foreshadows concepts used centuries later in modern military engineering. Inside, a gear system connected to hand cranks would have driven the wheels. Interestingly, Leonardo reversed part of the gearing in his original drawing. Some historians believe this was intentional, possibly to prevent misuse of his design, while others see it as experimentation.
The Artisans of Florence have constructed a full-scale interpretation of the machine using historically accurate materials. Visitors will have the opportunity to look closely at the exterior, examine the interior structure, and see how the mechanism operates in three dimensions.
Each month, we will highlight a different invention. Some will be familiar and others will be discoveries that reveal new layers of Leonardo’s thinking.
